What Is Mendix?

What Is Mendix?

Mendix is a low-code platform on which most of an enterprise application is built with visual tools rather than written code. The data model, screens, business rules and process flows are defined through visual editors, and the platform can be extended with code where needed. It sits within Siemens.

What problem does it solve?

Every enterprise application repeats a technical layer: user management, authorization, mobile compatibility, audit trail, versioning, deployment. That layer barely changes from project to project, yet it is rebuilt every time. Mendix provides it from the platform itself, so the team works directly on business rules.

Its second contribution is a shorter feedback loop. Showing a working screen to the business unit early surfaces a misunderstood requirement in days rather than months.

Which applications does it suit?

  • Request and approval processes
  • Field operations and inspection applications
  • Dealer, supplier and customer portals
  • Operational screens that pull data from several enterprise systems
  • Processes that run today on spreadsheets and email

Where is it not appropriate?

For software that needs heavy custom code outside platform standards, runs at very high transaction volumes, or will be productized and sold to a market, it is usually not the right tool.

Whether Mendix genuinely delivers speed is covered in a separate article. For our work on the platform, see our Mendix page.
